Small sites, built properly, one project at a time.

Umber Crest is a solo design and front-end studio. I take on one marketing site or product page at a time, work in fixed-scope phases, and hand over plain, maintainable code you can edit without me.

Best suited to founders, small teams and in-house marketers who already know roughly what they need and want a single person accountable for design, build and launch.

  • Who you work with
One designer, start to launch — no handoffs, no account layer.
  • How it is priced
Fixed fee per phase, quoted after a written scope review.
  • What you receive
Hand-written HTML, CSS and light JavaScript you own outright.

The practice

A deliberately small studio

I keep one project live at a time so the work gets real attention. That means fewer slots per year, clearer timelines, and no stretch of silence while your job sits behind someone else's.

Most of what I build is a five to twelve page site: positioning, a sensible page structure, type and layout decisions, then a hand-written front-end that loads fast on a phone. I write the markup myself, so performance and accessibility are decisions rather than afterthoughts.

A good fit when

  • You have a product or service that already sells, and the site is the weak link.
  • One person can make the final call on copy and design.
  • You want to brief writers or developers later using the files I hand over.
  • A two to six week window works for you.

Not the right call when

  • You need a logged-in product, dashboard or payments build.
  • Design approval runs through a committee with no named decision maker.
  • You need someone on call for daily changes — a retainer studio suits that better.

Engagements

Three ways to start

Each one is a fixed-scope phase with its own quote. Most clients begin with a diagnostic and decide afterwards whether a full build is worth it.

01

Site diagnostic

A written read of your current site: what the page is asking visitors to do, where the structure fights that, and what I would change first. Useful on its own even if you build it in-house.

Rhythm
One week, one call, one document.
You get
  • Page-by-page structural notes
  • Ordered list of fixes, cheapest first
  • Recommended scope if you continue

02

Single page, designed and built

One page that has to work hard — a launch page, a service page, a long-form pitch. Design and front-end in the same pass, so what you approve is what ships.

Rhythm
Two to three weeks, two review rounds.
You get
  • Layout and type system for the page
  • Responsive hand-written front-end
  • Image preparation and copy edits
  • Launch support on your host

03

Full site rebuild

Five to twelve pages rebuilt from the structure up, with a small component set your team can reuse. For companies whose site has grown by accretion and now contradicts itself.

Rhythm
Four to six weeks, weekly checkpoints.
You get
  • Sitemap and page templates
  • Reusable component and type system
  • Editable source files and notes
  • Two weeks of post-launch fixes

Selected work

Recent projects

Three representative jobs, described by what was actually done rather than by adjectives.

01

Holloway Field Supply

Full site rebuild · Workwear supplier

Nine overlapping pages collapsed into six. I rewrote the navigation around what buyers actually search for — sizing, lead times, bulk orders — and rebuilt the front-end so product tables stay readable on a phone in a van.

  • ScopeSitemap, six page templates, product table component
  • ShippedStatic build on their existing host, no CMS migration

02

Tern & Compass

Single page, designed and built · Guided walks

A seasonal booking page for a two-person walking outfit. The work was mostly editing: one route list, honest difficulty descriptions, and a short enquiry form instead of the four-step flow they had been quoted elsewhere.

  • ScopePage design, route index, enquiry form, image prep
  • ShippedSingle hand-written page, editable by their team

03

Marlow Grain Roasters

Diagnostic, then build · Small-batch coffee

Started as a one-week diagnostic. The main finding was that their wholesale offer was buried three clicks down; we promoted it to its own page and left the rest of the site alone, which kept the budget where it mattered.

  • ScopeDiagnostic document, then one new wholesale page
  • ShippedPage plus a short handover note for their developer

How a project runs

The working rhythm

Timings below are for a single-page engagement. A full rebuild follows the same shape with weekly checkpoints instead of two.

Before we start

Scope review

A short written exchange and one call. I send back the scope, the fixed fee and the dates I can hold. Nothing is booked until you agree all three.

Week one

Structure and type

Page order, what each section has to earn, and the type and colour decisions. Shown as one real layout in the browser, not a slide deck.

Week two

Build and review

The page is built as we go, on a private preview link. You give notes in one pass; I group and apply them, then we do a second, shorter round.

Launch week

Handover

Cross-device checks, images optimised, files handed over with a plain-language note on how to edit each section. Small fixes stay free for two weeks.

Useful questions

Before you enquire

The questions that come up in almost every first call, answered plainly.

How does pricing actually work?
Every engagement is a fixed fee for a written scope, quoted after the scope review. You see the number and what it covers before anything is booked, and it does not move unless you ask for work outside that scope — at which point I quote the addition separately rather than silently absorbing it.
How many rounds of revisions are included?
Two grouped rounds for a single page, three for a full rebuild. Grouped matters more than the count: notes collected in one pass get applied coherently, whereas a drip of single comments quietly turns into a different project. If a round reveals the direction is wrong, we talk about it rather than iterating around the problem.
What exactly do I get at handover?
The source files — HTML, CSS, any JavaScript, and prepared image assets — plus a short written note explaining how each section is structured and where to edit text. No build step, no dependency on a tool you have to license, and no code you need me to interpret.
Can you work alongside my existing developer or team?
Yes, and it is often the cheapest route. In that arrangement I handle structure, design and the front-end for the pages in scope, and hand your developer markup that matches your existing conventions. I will ask for one technical contact so decisions do not stall.
Who writes the copy?
You supply the substance; I edit for structure, length and clarity, which is included. If the copy does not exist yet, say so during the scope review — I will either build the page around a tighter message or recommend bringing in a writer before we start, since designing around placeholder text wastes a round.
What happens after launch?
Small fixes are free for two weeks. After that, you can book maintenance as a short block of hours, or simply edit the files yourself — that is the main reason I hand over plain code rather than something that only I can maintain. I do not sell ongoing retainers as a condition of the build.

Scope review

Tell me about the project

A few lines is plenty. If a slot does not line up with your timeline, I will say so in the first reply rather than hold you waiting.

  • Step 1I read your note and reply within three working days.
  • Step 2One short call to agree scope, dates and the fixed fee.
  • Step 3Written scope sent; the slot is held once you confirm.

Your note goes straight to the studio inbox and is used only to answer your enquiry.
